The disappearing paycheck is real. You look at the number on payday, look again ten days later, and there's no single thing you can point to.
The only thing that ever changed it for me was tracking every penny. Joyless for about a month, then weirdly satisfying. Any accounting software works, I use QuickBooks and would not recommend them specifically.
Doesn't fix the missing childhood part though. Nothing does.
What's the one that gets you? Mine was groceries. I would have sworn I spent half what I actually did.

Track every penny and avoid/pay down debt. It makes a huge difference. If you live within your means (not as esay as it sounds) and slowly build up savings the slow build does start to pick up steam.

I second this. My financial picture changed after I started using software to track every penny and where it was going.
